Our Mission
The Marshall County Exceptional Center, or MCEC, is a day training facility dedicated to innovatively educating clients with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities in Western Kentucky to empower them to live independently and engage meaningfully in their communities equitably.
Our History
The Marshall County Association for Exceptional Children & Adults, Inc. was founded as a non-profit organization in 1963 by a group of dedicated parents who sought to create educational opportunities for their children with disabilities. At that time, public education programs for children with Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities were nonexistent. In the fall of 1963, the Marshall County School for Exceptional Children & Adults opened its doors in a single room at the Benton Church of Christ, serving twelve children with one teacher. By 1967, the program expanded to accommodate sixteen children, two instructors, and one aide, necessitating a move to the First Christian Church on Old Olive Street in Benton, KY. In 1976, the old Briensburg school building was leased, turning the dream of that small group of parents into reality. The program was renamed the Marshall County Exceptional Center in April 1992. By April 1998, thanks to a Community Development Block Grant and the generous support of our community, we moved into our 17,000-square-foot facility located at 198 Old Symsonia Road in Benton, KY.
Our achievements would not have been possible without the interest and financial support of the people in and around Marshall County. The community’s contributions have been instrumental in our success.
